Liam Bennett scored his first goal of the season in Saturday's win over Reading
Cambridge United defender Liam Bennett says their results since securing immediate promotion back up to League One "speak for themselves".
Saturday's 2-1 comeback win at home to Reading means the U's have taken 11 points from their opening six matches, leaving them fifth in the table.
Bennett, 24, told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire: "There's no denying that the challenge was always going to be tough to step up.
"We've got to be adaptable, to continue to grow as a team. The results speak for themselves at the moment.
"We've put ourselves in a really good position and we have to be able to continue to develop and keep pushing, because we're more than capable of competing at this level - and more than capable of beating anyone, especially at the Abbey."
The victory over Reading saw both the U's goals scored by defenders. Kell Watts got the winner, giving him two goals already this term.
Bennett's 52nd-minute header to equalise was his first goal of the season, after netting twice in their 2025-2026 promotion campaign.
"It's something that me and (assistant coach) Adam Barrett have worked on; me getting to the back post, and the way I attack it.
"I've had a few this season where I was a bit disappointed not to put them in the back of the net, but buzzing to finally score.
"I've spoken before about wanting to contribute more in the final third, and happy to do it quite early in the season, and hopefully I can get a few more.
"Kell is a massive threat from set-pieces and it's up to us to make sure we put good quality into the box for him to go and attack."
The newly promoted side's league position could be even higher - they conceded late goals in four of their opening five matches, costing them seven points.
"We're in League One. There's always going to be good quality coming onto the pitch to try and get a result," said Bennett.
"We've done a lot of work in training in previous weeks, particulary due to conceding late goals, and trying to stay professional."
Cambridge United will visit Oxford United on Saturday (15:00 BST).

Mamadou Jobe helped Cambridge United win automatic promotion from League Two last season
Stockport County have signed Cambridge United defender Mamadou Jobe for an undisclosed fee on a three-year deal.
The 23-year-old made 49 appearances in all competitions as the U's won promotion from League Two last season.
He could make his debut for the Hatters in Saturday's home game against Wycombe.
"He is an exceptional defender first and foremost, with a great blend of physical and technical attributes that we feel will really add to our group," boss Jim McNulty told the club website., external

Gabriel Breeze came through the youth academy at Carlisle United
Cambridge United have signed goalkeeper Gabriel Breeze from Carlisle United for an undisclosed fee on a three-year deal.
The 22-year-old made 46 appearances in the National League for the Cumbrians last season as they missed out on promotion to the Football League, losing their play-off semi-final 2-1 at home to Boreham Wood in May after extra-time.
Breeze will create competition for places alongside current U's number one Jake Eastwood, after Neil Harris' side held the best defensive record in League Two last year, conceding just 33 goals on their way to securing promotion to the third tier.
Harris said: "Gabriel's a player we've tracked for a while now - a very young goalkeeper who already possesses valuable experience.
"We feel that over a longer-term contract, he'll gain great experience and the opportunity to grow, but we also know he has the capability to step in and play straight away."
