In bright Manchester sunshine, England - who give Ajmal Shahzad a Test debut in place of the injured Tim Bresnan - win the toss and bat first, while Bangladesh bring in bowlers Abdur Razzak and Shafiul Islam
But home skipper Andrew Strauss fails to negotiate the first hour of play, departing for 21 when he edges the recalled Shafiul to Imrul Kayes at second slip
Jonathan Trott, a double-centurion at Lord's, follows two overs later when he is bowled by the delighted Shafiul, a wicket that leaves England tottering slightly at 48-2
The newly-built conference centre, situated next to the Old Trafford pavilion, attracts plenty of interest from commentators and spectators - it bears some resemblance to the Lord's media centre
Alastair Cook plays some fluent shots in partnership with Kevin Pietersen as England look to rebuild after losing those two early wickets, hitting four fours
But after Cook and Pietersen have added 35, a change of bowling pays dividends for Bangladesh - left-arm spinner Razzak's first ball is edged by Cook to Junaid Siddique at slip
An uncharacteristically watchful Pietersen helps England reach 92-3 at lunch, when he is 22 not out from 44 balls, having hit only one boundary
Ian Bell's lifetime Test average against Bangladesh at the start of the series was 244 - it dropped to 168.33 after the Lord's Test, but he carefully keeps the scoreboard ticking after lunch
Pietersen reaches his fifty from 73 balls - but four overs later, on 64, he dances down the track to left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan and is stumped by several yards
Soon after Pietersen's departure, Shafiul Islam is injured in the field - leaving Shahadat Hossain to shoulder the burden as the only front-line seam bowler left on the field
Bell and Eoin Morgan take England to 215-4 at tea - but soon after the resumption, Morgan is brilliantly caught by Jahurul Islam at gully for 37, leaving England on 223-5
Wicket-keeper Matt Prior, perhaps in need of a few runs, comes in at the fall of the fifth wicket, but gets an early let-off when he edges just wide of Siddique at slip
With both his front-line seamers off the field for spells, Tigers captain Shakib Al Hasan is forced to employ an all-spin attack for periods, as England's sixth-wicket pair edge towards a fifty stand
The increasingly confident Bell hits a six and nine fours, and must have his eye on an 11th Test century, and his first at Old Trafford since hitting 106 not out against Pakistan in 2006
But when the Manchester skies darken with just under half an hour of play remaining, the umpires take the players off - and a light rain shower prevents any hope of a resumption. England will begin day two on 275-5
