Japan edge first day of Asian Games
The Asiad Busan Stadium is host for the Asian Games
The Asian Games opened in Busan on Sunday
Japan raced to four gold medals in swimming and won two in judo to eclipse China on the Asian Games' first full day of competition.

China still hold the overall lead - seven gold medals to six - thanks to two fencing titles won while the opening ceremonies were under way on Sunday night.

The Chinese also won gold in weightlifting, fencing, swimming, cycling and judo on Monday.

Host South Korea, a keen rival of Japan for second place behind China in the final standings, won gold in fencing and in judo.

In the pool, Japan's Takahiro Mori smashed his own games record in the men's 200-metre individual medley before the 800m freestyle quartet set an Asian record.

Kosuke Kitajima won the men's 200-metre breaststroke, also in a games record time, and Yuko Nakanishi led Japan's 1-2 finish in the women's 200m butterfly.

Yu Yang led a 1-2 Chinese finish in the women's 200m freestyle.

In the football tournament, China beat Bangladesh 3-0, while India defeated Turkmenistan 3-1 to also move on to six points and edge closer to the quarter-finals.

Time trial

Meanwhile, in women's weightlifting Li Zhuo tied world records for snatch and total lift.

Li and Myanmar's Kay Thi Win each lifted a total of 200 kilograms - 90 in the snatch and 110 in the clean in jerk - but Win had to settle for silver because of her heavier body weight.

Indonesia's Raema Lisa Rumbewas won the bronze with a total of 195.

Yasukuni Muneta, in the over-100-kilogram class, and Keiji Suzuki, at 100 kilograms, won Japan's judo golds.

South Korea's Jo Su-hee defeated Japan's Mizuho Matsuzaki for gold at 78 kilograms, while team-mate Choi Sook-ie lost to China's Sun Fuming in the over-78-kilogram final.

Elsewhere, Chinese cyclist Li Meifang finished more than a minute faster than Japan's Ayumu Otsuka in the women's 24.2-km time trial, winning in 34 minutes 24.820 seconds.

Kazakstan's Andrei Teteriouk won the men's 48.4km time trial in 1:02:11.05 to beat Kyrgyzstan's Evgeny Vakker by 47 seconds.

In the last Asian Games in 1998, China won 129 gold medals to 65 for South Korea and 52 for Japan.
