Barack Obama cannot afford to ignore the needs of America's rednecks
|
After warning Today listeners during the US election that rednecks rule the world, author Joe Bageant was somewhat surprised by Barack Obama's momentous victory.
But what should the president-elect do when he takes office to keep the rednecks onboard? In a letter from Kokomo, Mr Bageant has this advice.
Well, you did it, went and got elected. Soon we'll all watch the inauguration on TV which is an all-day affair on every channel. That gives me plenty of time to think about the 40 bucks I lost betting against you.
But it can never be said that I haven't always been 100% behind our commander in chief. In fact, I nearly got my can shot off in Fallujah supporting the last bull goose in the White House. Anyhow, I've got a few suggestions.
First of all, you can get everybody back to work who really wants to work by fixing up this country.
 |
If you pull off half of what I'm suggesting here, you'll not only get re-elected, but probably be made king.
|
A good start would be to fix everything that's broke down in this country. Bridges, roads, the power grid all them 100-year-old water systems.
A guy on TV last night said our crappy infrastructure is some kind of a 'metaphor'. But I figure it just means the country has been let go hell.
Then there's the tide thing. President John Kennedy said "a rising tide lifts all boats." As I understand it, that means the working fella gets to paddle around in the money alongside the fat cats.
Some of us dip up money with a bucket and some with a spoon, but everybody gets some. Where's mine? I can see the yachts from here on the beach, but my feet are plumb dry.
Will Barack Obama take the redneck's road to recovery?
|
Here's what I suggest: quit trying to lift the tide by pouring money into the banks through their back doors. It never comes out the front door to us.
Screw the banks. Just give us decent jobs and our paychecks will lift the tide. Hell buddy, the way I see it, we ARE the tide.
And finally, you can slap some of the bill collectors back into their cages. They're entirely out of hand, I can tell you. It's not like I got into debt taking vacations in France or something. (I wouldn't go there on a drunk bet!)
I got into debt paying for my wife's hysterectomy (no medical insurance), my son's tuition at the vocational school, and our $300,000 cardboard house that looks like it will fall down even before they repossess it.
That's my take on things.
If you pull off half of what I'm suggesting here, you'll not only get re-elected, but probably be made king. Or at least chairman of the national football league. If they offer you, choose the football league.
Respectfully,
Redneck Joefrom Kokomo.
