Runner Oscar Pistorius, perhaps better known by his nickname Blade Runner after his prosthetic running blades, has written a book about his attempt to be allowed to compete in able-bodied events.
Mr Pistorius is celebrating the one-year anniversary of the decision to allow him to compete in the Olympics. The unanimous verdict of the four month case only came after the runner had his prosthetic legs tested in 12 laboratories around the world.
The 22-year-old was born without the fibula bone in both legs. At the age of 11 months, on doctors advice, his parents decided to have his feet and lower legs amputated.
People are often surprised by the toughness of his prosthetic blades. "It looks very springy on TV, but you really have to compress these things to get them to do anything," he says.
Despite being allowed to compete, Mr Pistorius failed to qualify for the Beijing Olympics by a quarter of a second. "For 2012, I'm definitely going to step up to the plate," he says.
