Profits of over £2.98bn have been reported by Barclays for the first half of 2009.
Business editor Robert Peston explains the importance of the results. John Varley, chief executive of Barclays, discusses whether the public should be pleased at the bank's results, saying that despite "humbling" period of economic crisis, the profits are "certainly a good thing" for the UK.
Discussing bonuses at the bank, he said that he would make sensitive decisions based on guidance from the Financial Services Authority but made it clear that he thought a government cap on bonuses would be "a very bad thing".
