The Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth has said that he is unable to tie himself to a "specific timetable" for the withdrawal of UK troops from Afghanistan. Interviewed by Evan Davis, Mr Ainsworth said that it was "ludicrous" to suggest that the Army would remain in the country for 40 years, as recent press report have suggested.
And he added that he believed that, over the next couple of years, the UK could "make progress" in providing security to Afghans and in developing the country's army and police forces, with the Afghans "taking a growing share of the burden".
