The prime minster has admitted that there is 'a lot more to do' in Afghanistan.

Interviewed by Evan Davis on today's programme, Gordon Brown said that the UK's current strategy was 'in the right place' and that its success would be measured by how far the Afghan people were able to control their their own affairs, adding "you cannot be an occupying power forever".

Mr Brown rejected a 'fortress Britain' policy which would aim to concentrate on the security of the UK within its own frontiers.

He said that he favoured bringing British troops home only when Afghanistan was able to tackle the problems of drugs corruption and allowed its people to have a stake in decision making.
