The United Nations has launched its biggest ever appeal in response to a natural disaster, saying it needs more than $1.4bn for the victims of the earthquake in Haiti. The appeal comes as the UN's head of humanitarian affairs, John Holmes, criticised the relief effort. In a leaked e-mail to agencies, Mr Holmes said that much had been achieved but that many of their efforts had been poorly coordinated and resourced, and that major humanitarian needs had gone unmet.
