President Obama is holding an innovative meeting today to try to settle the course of health care reform in the United States, one of his main elections promises, and one that has been bedevilled by partisan warfare on Capitol Hill. With his Democrats no longer enjoying a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate, he needs a deal. So he has invited Republicans to join Democrats at a discussion chaired by him, that will be on live television. BBC's North America Editor, Mark Mardell, explains why.
