A judge has described the treatment of seven-year-old Khyra Ishaq as "beyond belief" after she was withdrawn from school, kept in squalid conditions for five months before she finally died of starvation.

The judge said she might still be alive had she not been failed by social services, who failed to monitor her properly after she was taken out of school and educated at home.

There is new legislation currently going through parliament that would tighten the regulation of home schooling. Would it have made a difference to Khyra?
