Records show that in 1946, a year after the end of World War II, around 400,000 German POWs were still in the UK here and many remained in captivity until 1948.
During this time most were forced to work on farms and construction sites across the country as part of a reparations policy against Germany.
Correspondent Mike Thomson reports on how according to research to be aired this evening on Radio 4's Document programme, this policy may have breached the Geneva Convention.
