The government were warned twice in consultations that the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs would not stand for proposed changes to the rules governing their behaviour, following the sacking of Professor Nutt, according to the Liberal Democrat science spokesman.
Dr Evan Harris told the Today programme that scientists just "want the freedom to do the right thing".
