The Health Secretary Andy Burnham and his Conservative shadow Andrew Lansley have continued their disagreement over the future of social care.

The government is publishing proposals today for a national care service, funded by compulsory payments. Speaking on this morning's programme, Mr Burnham ruled out a "death tax" to pay for the proposed service, which he said will be introduced after the next parliament. This, he added, would represent a "durable solution" to the issue.

But Mr Lansley argued that there should be a voluntary scheme, where people would be able to pay a one-off fee of £8,000 in return for continuing care when older, adding that the government was "in complete retreat" over its proposals.
