The Conservatives have proposed to give four million married couples and civil partners an annual £150 tax break if they are elected to office.

The Liberal Democrats have called the estimated £550m plan "patronising".

Lib Dem treasury spokesman Vince Cable told the Today programme that the policy was "insulting to marriage", adding that it "detracted attention from serious reform of the tax system to help families."
