Voters should act "intelligently" to prevent a Tory majority, Welsh secretary Peter Hain has urged.

Speaking to Today presenter James Naughtie he said that there was a "clear anti-Tory majority" in the country.

He admitted that a Labour majority was unlikely but that there was a "common agenda" for reform between Labour and the Liberal Democrats, which meant it was crucial for supporters of both parties to back the most likely winner in close marginal seats.

"The fight for first place in this parliament, as to whether David Cameron forms a government or Labour forms a government is in the key Tory - Labour marginals," he argued.
