The Russell Group of leading UK universities is proposing that graduates should have to start paying back their student loans earlier and at a higher rate of interest.

It says the money would help to plug a shortfall in university funding of more than £1bn over the next three years.

Professor Michael Arthur ,chair of the Russell Group and vice-chancellor of Leeds University, and Aaron Porter, president-elect of the National Union of Students, consider the effect of the new recommendations on graduates.
