A former firearms licensing officer says that the UK's firearms restrictions are "too complex", creating a lot of extra work for the police.

Mike Eveleigh told the Today programme that although the rules are "the firmest ones in Europe" but there are still "a lot of guns out there" legally held for many years.

Lord Mackenzie, a former head of the Police Superintendents Association (PSA), told Today presenter John Humphrys that "it's difficult to decide who should have a shotgun and who shouldn't". He added that it was difficult for the police to be able to pick up on people in charge of a firearm who "could be perfectly stable but then become unstable".
