The Defence Secretary has defended the partnering of UK troops in Afghanistan with the Afghan army following the killing of three British soldiers by an Afghan they were mentoring.

Liam Fox told Today presenter Justin Webb that he believed the attack was the action of a rogue individual, not connected to insurgents.

"We've always recognised the risks inherent in partnering," he said, but argued that the benefits outweigh the risks.

"We will not give up the strategy of mentoring," he said. "Because it is what distinguished an army of liberation from an army of occupation."
