Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg has cautioned against judging the success or failure of the coalition after its first 100 days in power.

"The distinguishing feature of this government is that it is a government for the long term, for five years, to get things sorted out for the long term benefit of the country," he told the Today programme.

Speaking to Evan Davis, he said the coalition was not just about spending cuts, but would deliver a fairer benefit and immigration system, a more balanced economy, greater civil liberties and a reformed political system.

He downplayed friction between the coalition partners, accepting that on green and immigration issues there was disagreement.

"In everyday life you co-operate and work together with people you disagree with," he said.
