There has been a rise in the number of cases of sexually transmitted infections in the UK, according to the Health Protection Agency.

"The rates of infections, particularly in young adults, are too high," Gwenda Hughes of the Health Protection Agency told the Today programme.

But she did accept that there had been an improvement in the number of people getting tested for sexual transmitted diseases.

She suggests the government needs to go back to advertising the safer sex message.

People need to be aware that in the future some infections "may become particularly difficult to treat," she told Evan Davis.
