Education Secretary Michael Gove has said that banding by ability "has a role to play" in schools in England, following a call from charity Barnardo's to require schools to take pupils from a range of academic abilities.

Speaking to James Naughtie, he said action needed to be taken to improve "one of the most unequal education systems in the developed world".
