Call for 'great reform' of murder law

Should there be new offences of first- and second-degree murder in England and Wales, in the same way as in the United States?

The Director of Public Prosecutions, Keir Starmer QC, has told the Today programme that he supports a change to the current system, which retains just one charge: murder.

One reason behind the calls for reform is to help clarify cases brought using what is known as Joint Enterprise - which allows the prosecution of groups of people on one charge.

Nicola Stanbridge reports on the difficulties faced in this type of prosecution.
