The joint general secretary of the Unite union, Derek Simpson, has downplayed speculation that Ed Miliband owed the unions something following his narrow victory.
"Well I bought him a drink once," he told Today presenter Sarah Montague.
Mr Simpson was clear, however, that he would be calling on the new Labour leader to set out an "alternative economic strategy", to confront coalition spending cuts.
