The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) has published a wide-ranging report into how fair a country is Britain. It finds that the UK is largely tolerant and open society, and that, in some areas, there has been progress towards greater equality. But in other areas, long-standing inequalities remain.

In one example, the Commission says progress in closing the pay gap between men and women appears to have "ground to a halt".

The Commission's Trevor Phillips told Today presenter John Humphrys that Britain faces being a society divided by the barriers of inequality and injustice.

Unfairness, he added, is "an outcome that you cannot influence by your effort or your talent or your ambition".

But he insisted that the report was "not just about the arithmetic of difference" and that creating a more fairer society was "not just about money".
