The first Guantanamo Bay prisoner to be tried in a civilian court, Ahmed Khalfan Ghailani, has been found guilty of conspiracy to use an explosive device but cleared of 284 other charges.

The verdict has led parts of the US media and political establishment to say that President Obama's strategy of winding down the detention centre by trying detainees through civilian courts rather than military tribunals cannot work.

But speaking on the programme, the UK's independent reviewer of terror legislation Lord Carlile said the decision should be respected.

"Criticism is merely political and pays scant respect to a sophisticated justice system," he said.

"It ought to be the duty of the responsible media to be pillars of what is right and not merely weathercocks of either public opinion, or the opinion of a small oppositional group of politicians."
