A crackdown on domestic violence could see abusers banned from their homes for up to four weeks.

Chief Constable Brian Moore, who has had responsibility for domestic abuse issues at the Association of Chief Police Officers, told the Today programme that new rules seek to create a "protective safe space" for those who are attacked in their own homes.

Sandra Horley, chief executive of Refuge, welcomed the moves but said she was concerned about the ability of domestic support services to prevent men returning home to attack their spouses or partners.

They were, she said, an "important change but not a fix-all" and there still needed to be a examination of the best ways to prevent domestic abuse.
