The UK's road and rail networks are set to come under massive pressure as snow is expected to disrupts the year's busiest day of travel.

Edward Welsh, of the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC), admitted that as many as a quarter of rail services could be cancelled in certain areas.

"We would expect most of the trains running today to get through on time," he said.

There was better news for those driving. The Director of Traffic Management, Simon Sheldon-Wilson, explained that "the roads are running very well at the moment".

But there are worries over the salt stocks. "We entered this period better prepared," Mr Sheldon-Wilson said, but added that "the salt situation is changing continually".
