In January this year Haiti was struck by a devastating earthquake that left 230,000 people dead and 1.5 million homeless. Tens of thousands of men, women and children suffered terrible injuries. Among them was 12 year-old Hans Charles whose legs were crushed after his home collapsed, killing his three sisters.

The Today programme's Mike Thomson reveals how an anonymous donor offered to pay for Hans to be flown to a Miami hospital for treatment after hearing of his plight.
