Innocent drinks was famously set up by three guys who devised a killer recipe for smoothies.
They sampled people attending a music festival. Above their stall, a sign asked "Should we quit our job to make this?".
Most people chucked their empties into the bin which said "Yes", the "No" bin stayed pretty empty. So quit they did.
Innocent beginnings, and with an energy efficient HQ, raw ingredients sourced responsibly, 10% of profits going to charity; the innocent mentality stayed as the company grew to where it is now, selling two million smoothies a day.
But when Coca-Cola bought a majority stake in the firm last year, their public image suffered the same scrutiny as other ethical firms like Pret a Manger, Green and Blacks and Ben and Jerrys who had sold stakes to multinationals. "Sell out" screamed the headlines, with the company name "Innocent" seeming to invite further scrutiny than ever.
