The former foreign secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind has said that regimes in the middle east have lost legitimacy and that, for their people "the habit of loyalty disappears with it".

And, speaking on the programme, he warned that revolution in Egypt is not yet over "nor is success guaranteed".

His comments come as unrest continues in the region. More than 80 people are said to have been killed in Libya where there are reports of isolated trouble in a suburb of the capital, Tripoli.

And in Bahrain, which has also seen major protests, the main Shiite opposition group has insisted that the government must resign and the army pull off the streets of the capital before it will take up an offer of dialogue from the country's crown prince.
