Foreign Secretary William Hague has apologised for the lack of evacuation flights from Libya yesterday.

The sister of a stranded worker told reporter Tom Bateman that the evacuation mission had been "a complete and utter shambles".

Mr Hague said that workers stranded in the desert posed a "very difficult question" for all nations involved, and would be the focus of UK efforts.

"We will look at every option, of course," he said.

For those waiting at the airport in Tripoli, he said there would be "more than enough capacity" for them to leave today, but admitted frustration that planes had not been able to leave yesterday.

On the question of Libya's future, Mr Hague said it was up to the international community to "increase the pressure" on Gaddafi.

"We've got the remnant of a government here that is prepared to use force and violence against his own people," he said, suggesting the UK would pursue an international investigation into alleged atrocities.
