The director of the London School of Economics has quit over its links to Libyan leader Col Muammar Gaddafi.

In his first interview since his resignation, Sir Howard Davies told Today presenter John Humphrys that he "jumped" and was not pushed.

"The school will recover... but it will recover more quickly if I accept the responsibility for two errors of judgement," he said.

These errors, he said, were to advise that a donation from the Saif Gaddafi's charitable foundation was acceptable, and to act as an economic envoy to Libya.

But he denied that it had been a mistake to offer training to members of the Libyan government and said that the overall independence of the school had not been brought into question.
