Outgoing BBC Chairman Sir Michael Lyons has said that in retrospect, the last four years of BBC output will be seen as a "rather rich period" in the corporation's history.

Speaking to Today presenter Justin Webb, Sir Michael accepted that it has felt "a rather tumultuous period" and that "substantial errors" had been made by the BBC, but that overall it was "significantly improving the quality" of the UK media.
