Health Secretary Andrew Lansley has asked the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority to assess a potential new fertility treatment which involves the transfer of human genetic material between two fertilised eggs.

The move begins the process of licensing the technique, which offers couples at risk of passing on serious inherited disorders a way of having a healthy child.
