There are fears that the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan may be facing meltdown following the earthquake which hit the country on Friday.

Reports from Japan say there has been an explosion at the reactor and several workers are said to have been injured.

A 10 km area around the plant has been evacuated but the BBC's Nick Ravenscroft, who was prevented by police from going any closer than 60km, described the situation as "all very orderly, all very calm".

Japan's nuclear safety agency said that radiation levels at the plant were "unusually high" but the agency denied that it would pose an immediate threat to the health of nearby residents.
