Masamichi Adachi, senior economist at JP Morgan, told him that, compared to last week, the Japanese people "feel a sense of crisis, a sense of uncertainty, a sense of instability...

"At the same time," he explained, "we have to recognise that this is not like the nuclear crisis which happened in the Soviet Union in 1986... but we still don't know what's happening tomorrow.

"We have to rebuild the economy, we have to rebuild confidence, we have to re-establish the strength of the economy."
