Reporting from the city, Ian Pannell found the protesters in belligerent mood.

"We're going to be free sooner or later," one protester told him. "We want freedom, that's all we want".

But Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt said that the time had now come for "urgent" action in support of the rebels.

"[It is] imperative that something is done, and something is done today," he said.
