Auguste Piccard, the Swiss-born scientist and inventor, set records for both the highest flight of all time and the deepest descent into the ocean. His exploits have inspired a new opera Piccard in Space, which receives its world premiere at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London at the end of the month.
