The coalition is launching its strategy on social mobility.

Writing in the Telegraph, Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and Work and Pensions Secretary Iain Duncan Smith say Labour had spent billions moving people above the poverty line, without significantly changing their lives or the life chances of their children.

Explaining the policy on the Today programme, University and Science minister David Willetts said the government would create a "single coherent strategy" that would deal with all the "crucial transitions" in peoples' lives - through school, university and work.

"We're pulling together all the different crucial stages as people go through their lives when key decisions or events shape their futures," he told Evan Davis.

"And we're trying to show for each one of them how we're going to improve social mobility and improve opportunity.

"We want for everyone to be able to see more clearly what their opportunities are and how they can seize them."
