Former first minister Henry McLeish has said Labour's problems in Scotland "go much deeper than this election".

"The seeds of this defeat were sown in 2007, indeed maybe earlier," he told James Naughtie.

His party treated the SNP as a "quirk", not as the formidable political operation they had become, he added.

Voters in Scotland "want a party that is going to protect Scotland" and that "links emotionally to what Scottishness is," he said, a vision Labour had failed to articulate.

"There is a fundamental substance of serious political debate that has to take place within the Labour party in Scotland," he said.
