The UN and the Commission for Global Road Safety are today launching a Decade for Action on Road Safety, in a bid to reduce the number of people killed yearly in road accidents around the world.

Lord Robertson, chairman of the Commission for Global Road Safety, estimates that twice as many people will die on the world's roads by 2100 than died in all the conflicts of the 20th Centaury.

He said that action on road design, helmets, seatbelts, and enforcing the law on drink driving, would have a "huge and dramatic impact" on the figures.
