Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who is in jail in New York accused of sexually assaulting a chamber maid, has resigned from his position as head of the IMF because he wants to put all his energy into proving his innocence.

Dominique Moisi, a special advisor at the French Institute for International Relations who dined with Mr Strauss-Kahn last month, says there is "no other solution".

"Such a brilliant man, such a brilliant career, ending in such an indignant way… [it's] the saddest thing I can think of," he told Sarah Montague.

He said that while many in France still believe he was set up, some are coming to believe that "there is maybe a Dr Jeckyl and Mr Hyde in the personality of Mr Strauss-Kahn".
