A group of MPs have said that the BBC Trust's new chairman Lord Patten "has much to get to grips with" in terms of its future direction and issues over pay.

Chairman of the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee John Whittingdale has concerns that the organisation has opened itself to ridicule over its move to Manchester.

"We support generally the BBC's decision to move part of its production to the north west," he said.

"It will send a very strong signal that the BBC does serve the entire country and is not just London based.

"But the BBC has been left looking pretty stupid when some of its top managers have huge reluctance to actually move with their operations to the north west, and then the BBC hired this so called migration manager who's commuting from the United States to carry out the job.
