Flight Lieutenant Alex Duncan received the DFC for his bravery

Flight Lieutenant Alex Duncan has been described as "possibly the luckiest man in the Royal Air Force".

The helicopter pilot has survived being shot down not once, but twice. And on both occasions he managed to fly his damaged Chinook to safety with all on board.

Describing the one attack, he told Sarah Montague how he was carrying high profile passengers at low level to avoid gunfire over the Afghan countryside.

"Once we got hit... I thought we were going into the ground," he said. But after lurching to the left, the Chinook controls came back online.

"We thought, OK let's get out of here," he said, explaining that he had to continue flying as the civilians onboard could have been killed if they had been forced to land in enemy territory.

With the helicopter "shaking very very badly" he managed to get all onboard to safety.
