Clothes moths are plaguing homes around the country, but despite an affinity for flames, they are hard work to get rid of.

Rachel Simhon, the author of the Housewife's Handbook, explained to John Humphrys that the only way to get rid yourself of moths was to clear everything out of your cupboards, dry clean your cloths, spray the cupboards with insecticide "and pray".

"A warm dark cupboard full of sweaty cloths… is a moth heaven", she said, explaining how it is the larvae which eat not just wool but all natural fibres including cotton and silk.

Other things that might help include putting your clothes in the freezer, using cat flea spray and emptying your draws and putting your clothes out in the sun.
