'Dramatic drop' in rail subsidy

Rail fares look likely to rise by around 8% in the new year as a result of an expected increase in the rate of inflation.

Edward Welsh, director of corporate affairs at the Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC), explains that there are "many improvements going on", paid for by the fare increases.
