Twenty years ago today hard-line communists in Moscow launched a coup against Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Within days the coup had failed, within weeks the USSR had fallen apart. Our Moscow correspondent Steve Rosenberg witnessed the collapse of the Soviet empire - and he has spent much of the last twenty years in Moscow, charting Russia's dramatic and often rocky journey as an independent state.
