US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has welcomed a new era in Libya, one of liberty, justice, and peace, if rebel leaders can secure weapons stockpiles and to guard against extremism and revenge attacks.

Wyre Davis reported that it is "relatively quiet" in Tripoli this morning, but that he had seen fierce fighting yesterday and the city was still "a very dangerous place to be".

Snipers loyal to Gaddafi continue to indiscriminately shoot civilians, he reported from a Tripoli hospital.

And there are real concerns that, with the Colonel continuing to evade capture, a political vacuum will develop in the country.

But one TNC leader in Tripoli told him that he was confident the rebel leadership would be able to hold the country together.

"I am almost certain that we will always continue to be one country, united," he said. "We will be a very positive force in the future."
