The Defence Secretary, Liam Fox, has flown to Libya amid growing demands that he disclose more details about his dealings with a close friend, Adam Werritty.

Last night it was revealed that he had held talks with a group of businessmen in Dubai in a meeting organised by Mr Werritty, who has no formal role at the Ministry of Defence. Doctor Fox has already ordered an internal inquiry at the MOD into the claims.

Speaking on the Today programme, the shadow defence secretary, Jim Murphy, said that Dr Fox was in a "self-inflicted political crisis" and that launching an inquiry does not go far enough.

"There's a very serious issue here about conflict of interest and the ministerial code and the prime minister is the person who can authorise an inquiry into the ministerial code.

"It's not for Liam Fox to launch an inquiry into himself, only the Prime Minister can do it and today I suspect we should hear from Number Ten and the prime minister about what action they intend to take about a wider inquiry into the ministerial code."
